For those who regularly follow my blog posts, I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize. The past week I’ve been blogging about Kona’s luxury home market located in the Keauhou Resort area. However, I failed to realize that many have no idea where the Keauhou Resort area is located, or what makes it so special.

Historic Keauhou Bay
The name “keauhou” comes from ke au hou, which means “the new era” in the Hawaiian language. It is also known to mark the site of the birth of King Kamehameha III in 1814, the second son of Kamehameha I.
Keauhou is bordered on the north coast by Kahalu’u Bay, with the Kona coffee belt to the east in upcountry Holualoa just up the slopes of Mount Hualalai. Located 7 miles south from the center of historic Kona Village along Ali’i Drive, the Keauhou Resort area has emerged as one of Hawaii Island’s great activity and cultural destinations.

Keauhou Resort Amenities and Activities
The Keauhou Resort area is blessed with sunny weather and calm waters that are perfect for snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking. These idyllic conditions made it a favorite hideaway of Hawaiian royalty, and today the area boasts diligently restored heiau (temples), ancient fishponds, and a wealth of historical sites. Interpretive centers throughout the resort weave together the area’s present and past, making a stay in Keauhou as enriching as it is relaxing.
Featuring the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa, the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort, and the Outrigger Kanaloa at Kona, it’s not hard to find world-class accommodations nearby. The Keauhou Shopping Center is the largest, modern shopping, dining, and entertainment center in Kona.

The Keauhou Luxury Home and Condo Market
Prominent and popular luxury gated communities, such as Keauhou Estates and Bayview Estates, are known for their open-air custom Hawaiian designed homes and panoramic coastline views. The Kona Country Club Mauka (mountain) and Makai (ocean) Courses weave their way from the upper elevations of Keauhou down toward the sea.
Along the way there are several luxurious gated condominium developments, such as the Villas at Keauhou Estates, Hale Kehau, and Kaulana, that also provide incredible in-house amenities and the same coastline ocean views as that of the subdivisions.
The Keauhou Resort area is poised to become the next epicenter of the highly sought after Kona lifestyle. As I continue to blog about this place that I love, I hope that this primer will bring you that much closer to understanding and loving it too.
